25 years ago, my wife Sandra and I were pastoring a church we had pioneered in North Dakota. On this particular day we had taken the short drive from Mandan across the river to Bismarck for groceries. Later that same day as we were returning home across the Missouri River Bridge between Bismarck and Mandan, I was struck suddenly with an unusual but very strong presence of God.

Now, I don’t have this type of thing happen often so I immediately jumped to attention, or as much as I could seeing I was at the time driving the car and couldn’t pull over on the bridge. No, I didn’t hear an audible voice, I didn’t see anything unusual, but I was suddenly overcome with an incredible sense of love.

I have heard stories from people who have clinically died and come back to life describe this kind of unbelievable love they felt when they were actually in the presence of God. I can only describe it as an amazing torrent of love, combined with a remarkable peace that washed over me in flood after flood. It seemed to be a baptism of sorts; it was almost like being immersed in warm water when one is really cold.

It only lasted minutes or even seconds, but when it was over I felt like a totally different person. I was renewed, transformed and most amazingly, I felt nothing but love for everyone in my heart. That instant, every negative feeling I might have had for anyone instantaneously melted away. That feeling, combined with an enormous capacity to be content in all situations, also came with an ability to love even those who attack me.

Thankfully, those things given to me by God have stayed with me ever since. Oh yes, since then, numerous problems have challenged my wife and I as we have labored together in the ministry, but God's love has carried us continually above it all.

I have told you this true story for a reason. The great commandment given by Jesus Himself in John 13:34–35 makes it crystal clear that the kind of love that was given to me is the same kind of love that God wants, even commands us all to have for one another. He also makes it clear that the kind of love He commands is a natural result of being His Disciple.

What do I want for you? I want you to be immersed in a deeper relationship with Christ so that the kind of love I have explained becomes a part of your permanent being. Everything I teach, everything I write is aimed at that one purpose; that you might have the kind of relationship with God that will produce the God kind of love and that your love will be a positive witness for all mankind.
